I sometimes think that it is those clues that later shape my climax, rather than my idea of the climax shaping those clues. I don't really know, though. You're dead on about the need to go back through the thing at the end and plant or replant clues as well. I want the writer to shock me. I want to go back and see the clues and then laugh at myself for not getting them when they were handed out.<BR/><BR/>This, of course, is personal preference and readers will differ in their wants and needs. And yes, their intelligence levels and socioeconomic status and on and on. I've had editors tell me I needed to put in information that was right there in clear, straight prose. Maybe the phone rings, or the tea kettle whistles--who knows what distracts them at that critical moment.
