I'm trying to picture it, and all I keep getting is the image of Amelia Bedilia "pruning" the hedges. Do you actually get a helpful mental image from that?

Oh, fine. I'll go to the slow-kid class. I suspect Edwards thought that having been published in 1929, this book was out of copyright. I also wonder what the Smart Bitches would find if they started subjecting other authors' books to the same scrutiny.cs harrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13708705800818667923noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8052003455667869062.post-48222750432706391192008-01-15T09:07:00.000-08:002008-01-15T09:07:00.000-08:00Sure wish I could use "a sky like torn plums." Good point about what is illegal and not illegal "borrowing." Also, the charge of plagiarism is being thrown around sometimes rather cavalierly. The unattributed lifting of lines from out-of-copyright sources isn't illegal, but it's still plagiarism and it's still unethical. Yes, the lifting from sources in copyright is worse, but even if every single line she grabbed from someone else's work were in the public domain, it'd still be plagiarism and it'd still be worthy of censure.

The fact that Shakespeare is out of copyright doesn't mean I can grab Romeo and Juliet, line-for-line, and publish it under my own name with no mention of Will. And the fact that Longfellow is out of copyright doesn't mean Ms. Edwards can lift lines from "Hiawatha" and publish them as her own without mentioning Henry.

AngieAngiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11920578701763415331noreply@blogger.com
